J.C. Wilson & Co. of Montreal was the first Canadian publisher to issue a series of patriotic postcards and envelopes between 1897 and 1902, celebrating Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee and later the Boer War. These “Victorian patriotic postcards” often featured Britannia, Union Jacks, maple leaves, and slogans like “Maple Leaf Forever” and “Patria Amamus.
These postcards captured the imperial sentiment of late Victorian Canada, reflecting both loyalty to Britain and emerging Canadian identity
Such items were marketed to both Anglophone and Francophone buyers, showing Quebec’s dual cultural currents at the time.
